BERGGRAT. The Ridge. in Swiss Mountain silk.

Our Berggrat. The Ridge. scarves are woven on a wooden handloom that is set-up with 8 shafts to produce the most refined alpine patterns in lines and classic graphical style elements. The design patterns tell stories of homecoming and birds´ eyes watching over us when travelling abroad. Artisan weaver Katharina Osterwalder accentuates the playful translucency and range of variation in surface design that can only be created by the most meticulous handweaving techniques. Although all scarves in this collection are dominated by the black warp and weft, each item shows a truly unique and singular design in lines and ornaments. Red lines remind us of the warmth and bloody scratches when chopping the wood for the fireplace. The black and white of winter is disrupted by a fine line of green branches as a glimpse on past summers and those to come. All scarves are handwoven with Swiss Mountain Silk, a trademark of Swiss yarn manufacturer Camenzind + Co.AG in Gersau.

Swiss Mountain Silk is the worldwide protected trade mark of Camenzind + Co. AG for all of their spun silk yarns and silk blends which are 100% produced in Switzerland. Their 100% Mulberry and Tussah silk yarns that we have used for weaving are produced only from raw materials of the first quality, carefully selected according to their inclusive and ecological quality criterias. A large proportion of their yarns are certified according to Oekotex Standard 100, Class I (for Babies). Camenzind + Co. AG also participates in high quality myclimate carbon offset projects to reduce world wide CO2 emission. Their aim is to reduce theCO2 output coming from production by 35% until 2023.

In our silk scarve collections "The Ridge" and "Floral Silks" we pay tribute to the long standing tradition of regional silk making. In the 19th century, the Zurich silk industry became one of the leading centres of the European silk industry. While most of the raws silk was imported from Asia, a handful of Swiss farmers grew mulberry trees to produce silk from their own silkworms. Fashion designers took into account global trends and mixed them with local predilections to bring the luxurious Swiss silks and original designs to customers around the globe from New York to St. Petersburg.  and an elegance beyond comparison. Since 2008 the Swiss Silk Association has been reviving the silk production in Switzerland from breeding the moth to rearing the silkworms to reeling and spinning the silk filament.
